Who Nicko was

Nicko had a way of leaving a lasting impression the moment you met him. He had a quick smile, a contagious laugh, and a heart that naturally drew people in. He loved sports, golfing, playing the guitar, fishing with his dad, and cheering on his siblings from the sidelines. More than anything, Nicko loved people — his kindness, humor, and infectious spirit made everyone around him feel seen, and those who knew him often say it was a gift to know him.

Diagnosed before birth

Before he was even born, Nicko was diagnosed with a complex form of single-ventricle congenital heart disease. Although doctors questioned whether he would survive, his family chose hope. Throughout his life, Nicko endured multiple open-heart surgeries, countless hospitalizations, heart rhythm complications, and a pacemaker, but he never let his diagnosis define him. Instead, he embraced every opportunity to live life to the fullest.

When his liver began to fail

At ten years old, the long-term effects of his heart condition led to Fontan Associated Liver Disease (FALD), leaving a heart transplant as his only chance to potentially save his liver. On January 5, 2023, Nicko was placed on the transplant waiting list. Just weeks later, he received the gift of a donor heart, but despite the efforts of his medical team, complications proved too great to overcome. Surrounded by his family, Nicko passed away on February 21, 2023, at just 12 years old.

In twelve short years, Nicko taught everyone around him what courage, faith, joy, and resilience truly look like. Today, 5 Beats for Nicko carries his legacy forward by supporting children and families affected by congenital heart disease, during some of life's most difficult moments. Every child deserves the chance to laugh, dream, play, and simply be a kid. Every heartbeat matters. And through this foundation, Nicko's heart continues to beat on in the lives of others.

BEFORE BIRTH
